Józef Madeja was born on 5 April 1899 in Opole. He attended and completed a primary school and a Realschule in Opole as well as the teachers’ college in Pyskowice, a small town near Gliwice. He began his first professional work as a teacher at a German primary school near Opole in 1919. Following the split of Upper Silesia, Józef Madeja, who declared himself Polish, moved to Katowice in 1921. He worked as a teacher at primary schools situated in the Polish part of Upper Silesia.He studied pedagogy at the Jagiellonian University, where he wrote his doctoral dissertation in the fi eld of psychology.
